Confused about the different types of cabinetry?

Kitchen cabinets are, without a doubt, the central part of any modern kitchen and the part that remains most visible. But what’s there to know about the different types on offer? We share our knowledge on all you need to know about the four most popular types of cabinetry.

Shaker style

Shaker-style cabinets are a timeless choice and have been popular for decades. They are commonly a higher-end option due to the construction costs involved. Their distinctive bordered design creates a rectangular inset in the door. They are super-versatile and can be finished in 2-pac (a type of paint) in a wide range of colours and finishes – for example, matte, satin or gloss. They look great in Hamptons-style homes or rooms where you need to create the illusion of a larger space.

VJ-routed panelling

“VJ” stands for vertical joint, so these panels get the most out of your kitchen if you want to add an element of texture without it being distracting. They are much the same as tongue and groove panelling, where the timber or MDF panels are equally spaced. Usually, with the sheets we use, the grooves are cut into them. We often see this type of cabinetry used in coastal-style homes, as they give that fresh and homely feel to any kitchen.

VJ cabinetry

Flat style

This understated style of cabinetry has a similar construction process to the shaker style and VJ-routed panelling but is usually a more cost-effective option as there is no edging required in the construction. So, it gives that seamless look to drawers and doors and allows other elements of your kitchen to take centre stage. Again, it can be finished in any colour with a gloss, matte or satin look.

Laminate

This is certainly a more cost-effective option. They come in a vast array of colours and textured finishes, including wood grain laminate boards. Laminate is an excellent cabinet covering material that can be applied to the surface of wood or panels to help transform their look.

So, what’s most popular?

We think that the flat style 2-pac with a combination of timber laminate is our most popular option at the moment. It means costs are kept in check, and you get a great-looking, versatile kitchen.

What’s most durable?

Laminate cabinetry is the most durable. We say this because 2-pac cabinetry can get marked or scratched if it’s not properly cared for.

Can you combine options?

Yes, absolutely! Many of our clients like to incorporate a flat 2-pac with a light or dark laminate. For example, flat white 2-pac on the lower cabinetry with timber laminate on upper cabinets.

Remind me again what 2-pac means?

Two-pac is an acrylic enamel paint system that originates in the automotive industry. It’s very durable and has a scratch-resistant finish. Two packs of liquid – a resin and a hardener – are mixed together, which results in a thicker paint-like mixture. When dry, it’s highly durable and looks great. There’s an unlimited range of colours, and you can choose the finish you want: matte, satin or gloss.
