Our guide to cabinetry handles in your kitchen

Cabinetry handles enhance your kitchen – both practically and aesthetically. But if you’re anything like the rest of us, you’ll know how much choice there is out there when it comes to selecting kitchen handles for your kitchen. Here’s our guide on what to consider to make the right choices for your kitchen.

Positioning

To answer the question of where you want your handles, you’ll need to get clear on what sort of look you are wanting to create. You may value practicality over aesthetics, in which case, a handle on every cabinet may well be the best option for you. Typically, though, we recommend handles on the base units and tall units. Overhead cabinets can look cluttered with handles, so you might want to select a different type of opening device for those.

Shape and size

There are several options to choose from, including knobs, pulls and handles. Each comes in a variety of shapes and sizes. For example, a very traditional country kitchen works well with round knobs rather than bar handles. Shaker and coastal kitchens sit well with cup-shaped handles. In contrast, straight-lined bar handles are popular for more contemporary kitchen designs. Consider the ones that suit your needs and remember that some handles are adjustable. There are also invisible handles, which are included in the cabinetry and operate with a push-to-open mechanism, a finger-pull device or a magnetic catch.

Material and finish

The important thing to think about here is how the colour of a handle sits against its immediate surroundings: the cabinet fronts and benchtop. For example, brushed brass or copper can work well as a contrast in a modern kitchen, carefully tying it in with other aspects of the kitchen. We often see brass and wood being used in more coastal kitchens and brushed and polished chrome or steel in more modern designs. Don’t be afraid to be a bit experimental – you might come up with a stunning accent look that gives your kitchen a real pop! Again, it’s all about thinking about what material and finish will work best in your kitchen.
