Painting your house white sounds simple right? But it can be quite overwhelming when it comes down to selecting your perfect shade of white for you and your home. Especially when there are thousands of shades to choose from.

There are numerous reasons to paint the interior of your home white. It’s timeless, neutral and acts as blank canvas. So, the most important consideration when choosing white paint is to identify which undertone you are after. A warm, cool or neutral undertone?

Cool whites often contain blue or grey undertones and are best suited to hamptons, minimalist and modern style homes. If your space is exposed to a fair amount of natural light then a cool white is a great choice to neutralise sunlight and open up the room even more. So, if you’re after that crisp, fresh feeling throughout your home then we recommend Dulux’s Vivid White or Lexicon Quarter.

Warm whites carry subtle beige and yellow undertones which promote a cosy and relaxing ambience. If your home is quite gloomy and lacks natural sunlight then a warm or neutral white paint is an excellent way to invite a sense of warmth into your space. These tones are very versatile and are often used in coastal, scandi and traditional style homes. Australia’s favourite warm white paints include Dulux’s Natural White or White Dune.

Remember – it’s important to sample and swatch your whites before you buy. Did you know that the same paint colour can look very different depending on the amount of light that the room is exposed to? It is important to pay attention to the way each white responds to lighting at different times of day. When choosing your paint we recommend sampling 3 different shades the size of an A4 piece of paper next to one another. And don’t forget to label them too! This will give you a great indication of which white best enhances the room.
