What to avoid when renovating
Renovations are expensive, and if you’re about to start on one, it can feel overwhelming. Being under time pressure or lacking clarity on the process can lead to mistakes that often mean more expense and more stress. You can avoid all of that if you avoid these common mistakes.
1. Poor Preparation
It’s never too early to start your renovation. It might be as simple as dreaming, planning, manifesting or making a mood board for your dream renovation. If you rush through the planning or you don’t thoroughly work through what you’ll need at every step of the process, you could be disappointed with the result. We recommend you think about your space, budget, schedule and theme well in advance of engaging contractors. You could look up home inspiration photos on Instagram or Pinterest and save images that appeal to you. That way, you’ll start to get a sense of what theme and function your space will take. And remember, the bigger the project, the bigger the plan that’s required!
2. Not doing your research
When renovating, it’s essential to ensure your tradies are right for you. There’s nothing worse than working with the wrong people and being faced with poor workmanship, delays or a bad attitude. Do your research by visiting websites, looking through Instagram and reading reviews. Ask your friends for their recommendations and always get a couple of quotes. That way, you’ll immediately get a feel for who you can build a good relationship with, and you can benchmark quotes against one another. And if you want some impartial advice, at KW Cabinets, we’d be happy to help.
3. Going over budget
You’ll need to get crystal clear on how much a renovation will cost. Nearly every new renovator will underestimate the cost, so estimating every detail of your project will give you a good indication of what you will have to budget for. Being able to financially complete the renovation is in the interests of everyone concerned.
