Our 7 tips to create your coastal-inspired home

Whether you live just a few paces from the beach or miles inland, the coastal theme is a design style that works with lots of décors. And it’s becoming increasingly on trend – wherever you live. It’s all about creating a state of mind that you can transfer to your home: comfortable, chilled out, and easy-going. It’s casual, understated and mindful. Here are our top tips for creating your own coastal-inspired look at home.

1. Use natural materials: Light wooden furniture and palm trees are the ultimate coastal combination, in our opinion! Incorporate these into your décor for an instant beachy feel.

2. Stick to a neutral palette: The beach is all about calming, mellow vibes. Achieve this in your home by sticking to a neutral colour scheme, with light or pastel tones to provide accents. For example, a neutral sofa can be complemented with some white and light blue cushions.

3. Bring in the outdoors: One of the best things about the beach is the fresh air and gorgeous views. Bring these elements into your home by opening up the windows and letting in some natural light. You could even add some breeze blocks to your outside walls. Loved for their unique look and thermal properties, these blocks are available in a range of styles.

4. Keep it simple: When it comes to coastal décor, less is definitely more. Keep your furnishings and accessories minimal to maintain that relaxed, breezy feel. Opt for white paint for both the interior and exteriors, so your furniture can provide a focal point within the home.

5. Add some beachy touches: Beachy elements like coastal wall art or driftwood are perfect for adding a touch of the sea to your home. Or how about opting for a feature front door in a pastel-coloured finish or, if you prefer neutrals, we recommend a light timber front door.

6. Incorporate natural fibres: Woven baskets, jute rugs, and sisal mats are all great ways to bring in some coastal texture. Or you could consider some rattan, brushed brass or light timber furniture to get the look. We’ve seen some great barstools, side tables, door handles and pendant lighting that will lift your look to that island feel. You could also add some palm trees for that lush, coastal look.

7. Use beach-inspired accents: From light blue cushions to an outdoor shower by the pool area, there are endless ways to add a watery touch to your home. As Gold Coast cabinet makers, we’ve seen some beautiful coastal homes and created some outstanding coastal kitchens. We hope these ideas have helped you take your project to the next level.
